Stranded on a Rooftop at -32°C:

4 Hours of Daylight Left and only One Thing Got Me Out

By David Vizzo

HVAC Technician

An Easy Job Nearly Turned Into a Survival Situation

I’ve been doing HVAC work for over two decades now. Routine repairs, maintenance, RTUs I’ve done it all. This job was nothing special: a regular Saturday service call at a packaging plant just outside of Red Deer, Alberta. I’d been there plenty of times before.

The work order was simple. Check on a finicky RTU, swap out a blower motor, run a few diagnostics. Four-hour job tops. My boss gave me a six-hour window since it was -32 with the wind chill and it was darn cold, the kind that eats through your gloves in 15min and he knew I’d be hopping back into the truck every half hour just to warm up.

I didn’t mind, I was getting paid overtime and since it was Saturday, production was down, and I had the place to myself. No traffic, no interruptions. Perfect.

The Phone Was Dead. And I Was Alone.

I rolled in around 10AM, gave the unit a once-over, started unpacking tools. Just another Saturday call.

After a couple trips to the truck, blower motor, parts, hand tools, I was set up. Not ideal hauling all that gear solo, but you make it work.

By 11, I noticed my phone’s battery was already toast. Cold does that. I figured I’d warm up in the truck later anyway & plug it in, no biggie.

By noon I was deep in the repair, crouched by the RTU, the wind was getting real bad and my hands were getting numb, I was just about to go warm up, but then I heard it:

The wind picked up, I heard a clang and then something metallic fall off the roof...

The Ladder Fell.

I looked over the edge, and sure enough… the ladder had tipped over. The darn wind gusts must have pushed it over.

In that moment I just realized how quick things can go wrong.

No access door. No way down. 4 of daylight left and no one expecting to hear from me until 6PM.

This wasn’t just a delay. If they didn’t notice something was wrong until evening… then made the 30-minute drive back out? I’d be stuck in -30 until 7-8PM. Maybe longer.

I started pacing to stay warm. Checked my pockets, gloves, jacket, nothing useful. Just tried not to think about how cold it already was. Or how much colder it would get once the sun dropped…

Then I Remembered The One Piece of Gear That’s Never Let Me Down.

I tried not to panic. Kept moving. Kept thinking. Then I felt the weight on my wrist.

My watch.

I’d almost forgotten I was wearing it my Njord APEX. Picked it up a month or so back after hearing a guy at the shop rave about it.

Said it was a smartwatch made for guys like us and not some plastic toy for desk jockeys.

I didn’t buy it for the bells and whistles. I bought it because I’ve been in enough unpredictable situations to know that when something goes wrong, most gear taps out fast. Figured worst case, it’d last longer than the Apple Watch my wife got me last year (cracked in a month).

And yeah, I liked that it tracked vitals too. Got a minor heart thing a while back, good to have something watching my back.

Up there, freezing and stranded, I remembered Karl the new journeyman he was working nearby. Kid’s always glued to his phone.

" Even with gloves on, the thing lit up. I scrolled through, found Karl’s number. He was working a site about 20 minutes away. I hit call. "

Connected with no issues. Even in this cold. Like it was built for that exact moment.

Thirty minutes later, he rolled in with a spare ladder. Never been so glad to see a Jake in my life.

When You’re Alone at -30, Your Gear Either Steps Up… or Leaves You There.

The thing is, I didn’t buy the watch expecting to rely on it like that. I figured it was just tough enough to survive jobsite bangs and freezing cold. But that day, it was more than that. It was a backup. It was the difference between getting home or being stuck up there til dark.

Now? It’s on my wrist every day. Doesn’t matter if it’s a quick text, a missed call, or just a “just in case.”

Karl even picked one up the next week. Said he wasn’t gonna be the guy without it next time

You’ve had enough gear tap out before you do.

We got tired of fragile screens, short batteries, and features built for office life.

So we made something different—
Wrapped in metal. Ran it over with an F250 and it still survived. (Yes, we tried it)

Has anyone tried this out?

I have, and it’s been amazing so far. Held up perfectly at my welding gig this summer.

This watch is f*ing insane! I work in construction and this thing takes a beating every day yet it still works great. I can finally take calls and reply to messages on site without my foreman’s permission! lol
